This past week, packing away the holiday decorations was overshadowed by tragedy. I had received the terrible news that one of my employees had been hit by a car, and had succumbed to her injuries. I had no direct experience with leading through something like this; I was nearly overcome with my own grief, as were other employees.
The week has been a lesson in the importance of reaching deep down into one’s core values, and leading from the heart. If I were to write the official “checklist of best practices” it would include: Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Offer hugs. Make a cup of tea. Talk about it. Let the long silences linger. Bring pastries and chocolate. Be kind. Be gentle.
Let grief have its time, and appreciate this one precious life we’re given.
